4 Diet Tips for Healthy Weight Loss

If done correctly, dieting doesn’t have to be about deprivation.  Dr. Joel Fuhrman, a weight loss specialist and author of the revolutionary diet book, Eat to Live, offers a simple calculation for healthy eating: Health= Nutrients/Calories.

Wondering how to choose wisely? Here are four ways to introduce nutrient-rich food.

1. Rethink Salad Dressing. Dr. Fuhrman explains that the fat we eat goes directly to our waistlines–and that includes the “healthy” fat in olive oil-based salad dressings. However, a salad dressing that is high in fiber and nutrients will be more filling and prevent fat storage.

2. Reduce Fruit Juice. Even though the sugar in juices are natural, juice is lower in fiber than fruit and less nutrient-filled. Instead of drinking juice, Dr. Fuhrman recommends using it in small portions to flavor dressings and sauces.

3. Go Raw. Some nutritionists say that vegetables must be cooked and prepared with some fat in order for nutrients to be absorbed. Dr. Fuhrman explains that this isn’t true. He recommends eating four whole fruits and several large, raw salads every day. Not only do raw vegetables help prevent cancer, but they also contain enzymes that prevent digestive diseases. Start thinking of salad as a main dish.

4. Follow the 90 percent rule. Many diets emphasize the importance of lean meats that are high in protein. But Dr. Fuhrman notes that plant foods have more protein than we think. Dr. Fuhrman recommends that only 10 percent of what you eat is a processed food or animal product. If the other 90 percent is coming from unrefined plant foods, you can eat as much as you want without fear of disease or obesity. Ready to Eat to Live? Dr. Fuhrman’s Vook has videos, recipes and more guidelines to help you lose weight fast–and live longer.

A Rave Review: Heroes for My Son

Recently, people have been talking about how technology disrupts our brains and prevents human interaction, so we were thrilled to learn that Zealot Benmergui, a reviewer at  MobilitySite,  read Brad Meltzer’s Heroes for My Son with his 11-year-old son. We’re happy that the Vook provided this bonding opportunity for the pair–and we’re also pretty honored to hear what Dad had to say about the title:

“Though the name may sound like a creature that could eat you on Pandora, Vooks are actually clever little media hybrids. They are very very well suited for presenting information or stories which are episodic in nature or can benefit from having a lot of background material readily available. For example, if you have a biography of The Beatles, you can build video or music clips directly into the text at the appropriate places. If you want to watch or hear it, you click PLAY…if not, you can continue reading. The Vook makes use of the now somewhat ubiquitous “Pull and Release” method to change chapters. Pull the screen up past the end, and release it. You can also switch chapters using arrow buttons on the toolbar, or a drop down Table of Contents. Vooks are usually arranged in segments due to this method of changing chapters, each one standing alone and often able to be read in any order. Collections of short stories, poetry, essays, historical treatises, erotica (yes, I said it), self help guides, film or literary criticism…all of these would make fantastic Vooks.

It is easy to see the tremendous possibilities in the Vook format, especially when tied to a tablet device like the iPad.

I very much enjoyed my first experience with a Vook mainly because I rapidly dropped my attempt to think of it as a Book with video plug ins. A Vook is really a multimedia platform that centers around text, rather then a traditional “book”. It can gather information of all sorts, text, pictures, video and sound and merge them together in a sort of self-supporting package…a PDF on steroids. On top of that, it is charmingly non-linear and can be approached from many different angles…not just a straight forward “start at the beginning” sort of thing. A scholar’s dream. More a chocolate box than a book, especially if you are like me and enjoy really digging down into a subject while reading.

As for Heroes for my Son, I thought Meltzer put together an excellent collection of figures that would make great role models for any young person. I would have liked a little more content however, since he restricted himself to only one or two anecdotes about each figure. For example, he boiled Einstein down to a little about his childhood, and the Theory of Relativity. Since this is a Vook, some links to websites or more in depth information would have been very welcome.

However, the main thing Meltzer’s vignettes did (and I am sure were intended to do) was open a conversation which was still going on this morning about personal heroes, who they were and why. Using Meltzer’s list as a jumping off point, I talked to him about some of my own heroes, some he has heard about from me a lot (Theodore Roosevelt, Josef Trumpledor) and some he hasn’t heard as much about (Quentin Crisp, Adlai Stephenson)…and I learned a little bit more about who my son considers to be his heroes. If a good book makes for good conversation, then this was definitely a good book.

Heroes for my Son is a book I would recommend to any parent looking for something to share with a child. It will open up discussions on all sorts of important issues, as well as just being some nice, short profiles of some great people. It is also a great introduction to the world of Vooks.”

E-Books Killed the Video Star?

There’s been quite a lot of buzz about our new Vook with Blair Underwood, From Cape Town with Love. We’re thrilled that Blair’s excited about the project and talks about his Vook everywhere, and it’s been really exciting to interact with Blair’s fans all over the Web.

In fact, it’s almost hard to keep track of all the great outlets that have covered Blair’s Vook, but this AP story really caught my eye.

The journalist, John Carucci,  wrote a story that was witty, charming and very perceptive. The headline, “Blair Underwood Aspires to Book Stardom,” made me chuckle, but it also made me think.

Not only do Vooks add a dimension to books, but they’re a new medium for existing and aspiring artists to express their vision.

If you have the urge to express your vision, email me (rachel@vook.com) your favorite part of From Cape Town with Love and you’ll be entered in a contest to guest blog for Vook.  I’ll be accepting entries until Friday, June 11th, and I promise: I’m gonna make you a star…

Can You Be Spiritual in the Digital Age?

Is it possible to be enlightened in the 21st century? We have plenty of material knowledge–but we get hit from so many sources–television, internet, Facebook, Twitter, etc, that it all starts to become a blur. We have all the information in the world, but no idea what to do with it.

As I was watching the Siddhartha video in our latest Vook, Deepak Chopra’s Buddha Guide,  it occurred to me that in the modern world, we have the opposite problem as the young Buddha. Prince Siddhartha’s father tries to shield him from suffering so he will assume the throne without guilt. Only when Siddhartha confronts the real world–and the reality that suffering is an inevitable part of daily life– can he begin his spiritual journey.

YouTube Preview Image

Now, we see suffering everyday, but often do nothing. I wondered: What would it take to get us news-saturated folk off on a more conscientious path?

In both of the Vooks we’re releasing with Deepak Chopra today, videos supplement text and give us the tools to gain understanding from our experience. In Deepak Chopra’s Buddha Guide, he interprets the life of Buddha to present a philosophy for living. In Sages and Scientists, top researchers and thinkers explain how our technical knowledge can be supplemented with a sense of spirituality that guides us toward a more balanced world.

Just as Siddhartha’s eyes were opened when he left the Palace, I think technology has the power to enlighten us. What do you think? Can technology help us to lead fuller lives? Let us know what you think in the comments, or @vooktv.
